Alex Van Den Berg
Alex Van Den Berg
Alex Van Den Berg had his first taste of road motorcycle racing in 2010 a the age of 16 after coming from a Motorcross-racing background a few years prior.
Alex started on a Honda CBR150 and competed at Killarney in the Short Circuit Racing Series in the CBR150 Junior Championship. Within 3 years, Alex managed to win the 2013 CBR150 Junior Championship. After clinching the CBR150 Short Circuit title.
Alex had plans to compete in the Killarney Regional Superbikes on the main circuit or 2014 and was surprised with receiving a Honda CBR600RR at the end of 2013 where he competed in the last race of the year in the Clubmans Superbikes where he managed to win both races with a big gap first time out
2014, Alex completed his first full main circuit season in the Regional 600cc Superbike Championship where he managed to secure 3rd overall in the 600cc Championship, 3rd overall in Class B as well as earning himself Superbike ‘rookie of the year’.
2015, Alex competed in the same series but now piloting the more competitive Kawasaki ZX6R where he managed to win Class B and take 2nd place in the Regional 600cc Championship
2016, Alex decided to go against South Africa’s best and compete in the SuperGP National 600cc Championship where he managed a best finishing position of 3rd place, despite not having raced at any of the circuits besides Killarney. During 2016, while competing at Nationals, was when Alex noticed the gap in the market which later developed into the formation of what GFP is today.
2017, Alex made the move to compete in the Regional Superbike 1000cc class in the Killarney regional championship onboard a Yamaha R1. Things looked great , after taking 3rd place in the first and second round first time out on a 1000cc, unfortunately the motorcycle had major mechanical issues which saw him miss a few races until taking over his fathers motorcycle (Honda CBR1000SP) where he again claimed a few solid top 4 finishes.
2018, Alex changed manufactures to pilot a Suzuki GSXR1000 which he really felt at home on. First time out on the Suzuki, Alex competed at the prestige Kylami Grand Prix Circuit in the Thunderbikes class where he surprisingly got 1st place overall ahead of some seriously fast National racers. This victory was also the first victory for the new Suzuki GSXR1000 in Africa at a National level. Shortly after starting the season is when Alex decided to fully dedicate his time and attention to focusing on building GFP and relocated to Johannesburg, putting his racing on hold for 3 years until 2021 when he decided to make a comeback after GFP was established.
2021, Alex competed in the Monocle Motorcycle Racing series and surprisingly managed to clinch 4th overall in the Premier 1000cc Superbike Class after having not competed on any of the race tracks on 1000cc machinery.
This saw the formation of Team GFP which has gone from strength to strength.
2022, Alex will be competing in the Motorcycle racing series competing against South Africa’s best Superbike racers onboard his Team GFP Suzuki GSXR1000.
